Logos

The Minnesota Carlson visual mark is a key element to be included in virtually all our communications. It represents our relationship with the University of Minnesota. The University is the primary brand, and Minnesota Carlson is the sub-brand.

There are several official logos that represent the University brand. They are:

  • The wordmark
  • Unit + wordmark combinations
  • The Block M
  • Goldy Gopher
  • The Regents Seal

These logos may not be altered. Detailed guidelines for how each of these logos may be used can be found on the University Marketing Communications brand website.

Permissible Use of Logos

  • Carlson faculty and staff automatically have access to Minnesota Carlson logos.
  • University of Minnesota faculty and staff can request access to the Google Drive folder where they are stored. To receive access, please indicate in the Google Drive request how the logos will be used.
  • External business partners can request access through Google Drive. To receive access, please indicate in the Google Drive request how the logos will be used.
  • The use of our logos helps our audiences to quickly see that it is a University communication or partnership. Because most student work is not communication on behalf of the University, student access to logos is limited.
  • All logos are reserved for official University business and may not be used to promote non-University activities or imply endorsement.

Primary Logo

The Minnesota Carlson logo should be used in most use cases. The Minnesota Carlson logo is offered in 3 formats:

  • horizontal (preferred)
  • stacked (preferred)
  • 2-line stacked (for use when space is limited)

The horizontal and stacked formats are preferred, while the 2-line stacked version is available when space is limited.

The logos are graphic elements and should not be replicated using type in graphic design. They may not be altered in any way.

The Block M and Minnesota Carlson may be placed in separate locations in a design layout. In these cases, use the graphic file for Minnesota Carlson, not type/fonts.

Examples where the primary logo is used:

  • Internal communications
  • Alumni marketing and communications
  • Local and national marketing and communications

Guidelines for use:

  • The Minnesota Carlson profile picture is used for programs, departments, centers and institutes on social media accounts.
  • The profile pic is used only on social media. It is not used for any other marketing or communications purposes.
  • The profile pic is not customized with the names of programs, departments, centers and institutes. Instead, unit names appear on social media profiles as the page name and/or username.

Applying the Minnesota Carlson Mark

Website

In compliance with University Marketing Communications requirements, our name appears on our website without the Block M preceding it. This is because the Block M along with the University of Minnesota wordmark appears at the top of every web page.
